Ambassador: We can’t ratify the EU-Canada Treaty easily, Romanian businessmen must have free access like all Europeans

Romania can’t ratify the EU-Canada free trade agreement easily, as long as the Romanian businessmen don’t have the same free access to this country like other European citizens, Romanian Ambassador to Canada, Maria Ligor, told local Mediafax.

She added that, in the last year and a half, Bucharest and Ottawa started “a period of intense negotiations and talks” about visas for Romanian citizens, which correlates with the relationship between EU and Canada.

“It’s not just an interest or an objective of the Romanian side, it’s also an objective assumed by the EU. Whether we are talking about the introduction of regulations on visa reciprocity between the EU and other states, third countries, or we speak about opportunities created in a very important agreement, a trade agreement between the EU and Canada,” she said, cited by Mediafax.

According to Ligor, the free trade deal will have a major economic impact, of tens of billions of euro.

“We, from Bucharest, we consider that we can’t ratify such an agreement easily as long as our business community can’t take part in these new opportunities like all the other European citizens. And that actually means free access conditions like all Europeans,” added the Romanian Ambassador.
