Colombia: UN Worried About Trade Agreements

The negative impact of free trade agreements on the poorest part of the population worries the UN

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights warned in its latest meeting’s conclusions, which were revealed this Tues., of the negative impact of free trade agreements on the most vulnerable part of the nation’s populace.

In its analysis this group recommends that Colombia "consider revising the free trade agreement with the U.S. in order to protect against the rise of the price of medicines, especially as regards low income persons."

In its report, the Committee also highlighted a series of concerns over the persistence of the production and traffic of drugs in the country. It also mentions the negative effects of aerial fumigation — used for fighting drug-trafficking — on food security, on health and on the population’s means of subsistence. Therefore, it has asked the government to ensure transparency in the fight against drugs and to promote alternative economic activities for farmers who cultivate coca.
