PhRMA Calls for Strong IP Protection for Biologics in TPP FTA

U.S. pharmaceutical industry association the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is calling on the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to include strong intellectual property (IP) provisions, such as 12-year data protection for follow-on biologics, in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.

The TPP agreement is a free trade agreement (FTA) that aims to eliminate all trade tariffs between participating countries by 2015.

The U.S., Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Peru and Vietnam are involved in the discussions.

PhRMA is requesting the IP provisions included in the TPP agreement meet with “U.S. levels of protection.”
