S. Koreans protest over U.S. beef safety

SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) — Some 10,000 South Koreans gathered in Seoul late Friday to peacefully protest the government’s decision to resume U.S. beef imports, despite outcry over the safety of the product once banned over concerns of mad cow disease.

The South Korean government has agreed to fully open its market to U.S. beef by the middle of this month. If the deal takes effect, it will be the first time in almost five years that Seoul has allowed the import of bone-in cuts from cattle over 30 months old.
