Division of Society in Modern Economy

By: Dr.Y.C.Zala, Agricultural Economist

In our democratic model, whole population of the country may be divided into four strata which have to perform their assigned functions with an update to the realities of the modern economy.

At the top stratum, we may see politicians and government leaders who can exert a great deal of control over resources through the coercive powers of government. One historical function of the first stratum is to protect the less powerful consumers, taxpayers, and workers of the third stratum from the market control typically held by the business leaders of the second stratum. In past centuries, first stratum included the religious leaders and Rushi i.e. Vashisth, Vyasa, Visvamitri etc.

In second stratum, we may put business leaders who have extensive ownership of and control over resources, especially capital, entrepreneurship, and land. In past centuries, second stratum included kings, queens, Thakors, Nagar Seth and others of the ruling elite.

The third stratum is the largest working class which contains workers, taxpayers, and consumers. They have limited ownership of and control over resources usually nothing more than their own labour. The third stratum, which forms the backbone of any modern economy, is usually at odds with the business leaders of the second stratum. Help may come from the government leaders of the first stratum or the journalist of the fourth stratum—but don’t count on it.In past centuries, this third stratum included the peasants, serfs, or artisans who performed the labour deeds for the ruling elite.

Inventive journalists extended this classification to include themselves as the fourth stratum. The journalist, reporters, and other media representatives of the fourth stratum keep a watchful eye on the doings of the first and second strata and hopefully provide valuable information to the consumers, workers, and taxpayers of the third stratum. However, in that news and journalism has become, along with other businesses, a mega industry, many fourth stratum watchdogs have become card-carrying members of the second stratum (and some even the first stratum). As such, some journalists are more concerned with protecting and promoting business and government interests than consumer interests. Success of democratic model predominantly depends on this fourth stratum of the society. We all expect much from them.

The major problems in Indian are wide inequality in income as well as inefficiency and unemployment in our democratic model. Recently, though recognizable growth rate is realized ,the problem of increasing over inflation also a great issue. Our population elect the first stratum who are not enough proficient to lead our country in proper direction. It is needed to send message to the first stratum that India needs a more scientific and quantitative approach for developing the nation. Therefore ,this first stratum should realise their priceless role which society expect from them.
