Peru to decide FTA referendum

Peru to Decide FTA Referendum

Lima, Nov 22 2005 (Prensa Latina) Promoters of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Campaign "Asi no," will deliver this Tuesday to the National Electoral Jury (JNE, in Spanish) the documents signed by hundreds of Peruvians opposed to the FTA with United States.

The initiative organizers assure they have collected nearly 46,000 signatures, more than the amount needed (40,000) to make Congress vote on a bill to put to a referendum whether Peru should adhere or not to the FTA.

The campaign’s coordinator is made up of representatives from 56 institutions and social groups throughout the country. They are convinced the FTA will cause disastrous effects for the country’s economy and life in general.

If the referendum’s request is accepted, it will be held on April 9, 2006, when over 16 million Peruvians will vote to elect a new president, vice president and 120 Congress members.
