Colombia, Panama work toward free trade agreement

PANAMA CITY, Panama – Colombia and Panama started the seventh round of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on May 28 and talks will last for four days, according to Panama’s Trade and Industry Ministry.

The discussions will center on customs cooperation, mutual assistance and access to markets, according to the ministry’s prepared statement.

In the previous round, held in March in the Colombian city of Medellín, “progress was made in almost every issue that had been pending since negotiations were suspended in October 2010,” according to the statement.

Panama and Colombia suspended the bilateral FTA negotiations in 2010 during the fifth round of negotiations after agreeing on 21 of 25 issues.
