Heads of government and policy organs of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) will meet in the Kenyan capital Nairobi from May 11-23 to consider the progress made on the Economic Partnership Agreements with the European Union among other things.

A press release said the 12th Summit would also focus on strengthening and consolidating the Free Trade Area (FTA) and push the agenda for deepening integration through the Customs Union.

Uganda and other members’ countries, which have not yet signed to the FTA, are expected to comply to allow other member countries enjoy privileges of subsidised taxes for trading amongst each other.

The business community in the region would also be drawn at the Comesa Business Forum planned to take place on May 18-19 at Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC).

Comesa is the largest African economic bloc comprising of 20 member States including Uganda, Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda.

Running alongside the Business Forum will be a trade exhibition from May 14 - 20 also at the KICC.
