French farmers protest against EU-South America trade deal
French farmers staged a protest today outside the Palace of Versailles against the free trade agreement between the European Union and the South American trading bloc Mercosur.
A petition signed on September 17 demanding the repeal of the controversial Duplomb law will be debated in the French National Assembly after collecting over 2.13 million signatures, the "France Unsubdued" (LFI) parliamentary group announced.
The law follows widespread farmer protests last year, during which agricultural workers expressed anger at government policies and a planned free trade agreement between the EU and the South American trading bloc Mercosur.
Farmers said the deal would lead to unfair competition and exacerbate existing restrictions in the sector. They drove their tractors to Paris and blocked the capital for days.
The French government responded by promising reforms and improvements to support the agricultural sector after negotiations with farmers’ unions.
