Implementing Free Trade before 2007 forces hefty agriculture imports

5 September 2006

Santo Domingo.- The possible implementation of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States before the year ends will compel the Dominican Republic to authorize hefty import quotas of products in the agribusiness sector, and which could cause an exceeding supply that may jeopardize local producers.

Goods that could be affected are sugar, beans, garlic, onions, meats, and milk among others, given that imports would have to cover the complete quota for the year, since allotments cannot be fractioned.

Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) president Osmar Benitz has brought the issue to the forefront and suggests that, if the complete quota method is to be enforced, that the FTA should be implemented as of January 1st, 2007, and not before then.
