Indonesia has officially become a Contracting Party to the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) as of Monday, February 2, 2026, marking a significant step in its commitment to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The accession follows Indonesia’s submission of its instrument of accession to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the depositary of the 1907 Hague Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, on December 4, 2025.
Coinciding with the PCA’s 127th anniversary, Indonesia now stands as its 127th member state, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs official website reported.
Established in 1899, the PCA was the world’s first international organization dedicated to promoting peace through law.
Headquartered at the Peace Palace in The Hague, it has evolved into a modern arbitration institution handling disputes involving states, state entities, international organizations, and private parties.
Its mechanisms include arbitration, conciliation, fact-finding commissions of inquiry, and other dispute resolution procedures. The PCA also offers training and capacity-building programs for government officials, practitioners, and professionals from member states.
Indonesia’s membership opens new opportunities to access international dispute resolution mechanisms, strengthen its role in shaping international law, and nominate Indonesian legal experts as arbitrators within the PCA.
It also enhances Indonesia’s negotiating position in drafting international agreements on dispute settlement and supports its interests in related organizations such as ICSID (International Center for Settlement of Investment Dispute), ICJ (International Court of Justice), and UNCITRAL (United Nation Commission on International Trade Law).
Through its participation in the PCA, Indonesia is expected to play a more active role in global legal affairs, particularly in advancing peaceful dispute resolution and contributing to the development of international legal norms.
