Investment agreement signed with Switzerland

Friday, December 30th 2005

Guyana and the Swiss Confederation recently signed a Bilateral Investment Treaty which will facilitate an increase in Swiss investments in the local economy.

A release from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation said the treaty will also aid in promoting bilateral economic cooperation.

The release said that a draft agreement was tabled by the Swiss Federal Council in 1996. "After years of intensive consultations, a harmonised text was agreed in December 2004" leading to the internal approval process in Switzerland.

The agreement was signed on December 13 during the World Trade Organization meeting in Hong Kong.
