Making or Missing the Links? The Politics of Trade Reform and Poverty Reduction

While much attention focuses on international trade negotiations, developing countries also introduce trade reforms nationally as part of World-Bank supported economic adjustment programmes. These have proved highly controversial as different social and economic groups lose or gain as the national market is opened to foreign competition and investment.

This new briefing for journalists explores the polarised debate on the links between trade liberalisation, economic growth and poverty reduction, looking at the possible effects of trade reforms on the agricultural, manufacturing and service sectors. It explores the costs and benefits of trade reforms for different people in developing countries and asks what the options are for making trade work in favour of the poor.

The brief can be downloaded free from http://www.panos.org.uk/PDF/reports/prsptoolkit3.pdf and is the third in a series of media briefs to help journalists report on poverty reduction issues.
