Mercosur plans to sign free trade agreement with Israel

14/12/2007

The Mercosur is expected to sign a free trade agreement with Israel next week during the Mercosur Summit in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The last details of the deal were reportedly worked out today, and the agreement could be signed on Monday during the visit of an Israeli delegation headed by Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Commerce Eliahu Yishai. Some products should have zero tariffs from the beginning, while others will reach the zero mark over several years.

The Mercosur mainly exports meat and agricultural products, such as soybeans, to Israel. The Israelis sell mainly electronic products, chemical agricultural products, and software to the Mercosur.
