Mozambique launches first shipment of goods for export under AfCFTA

Mozambique has officially launched its first shipment of goods to be exported under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), in a bid to boost intra-African trade and advance regional economic integration.

This was in a historic event held in the Mozambican Port City of Biera, which was led by the Prime Minister of Mozambique, Maria Benvinda Levi and witnessed by the Secretary General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene.

Levi, while calling on the private sector to invest in industrial development and infrastructure under the government’s ‘Industrialise Mozambique’ initiative, noted that Mozambique’s trade with other African nations had reached $7.1 billion over the past five years.
“The AfCFTA provides a platform for establishing strategic partnerships and boosting economic and business activities for the private sector. This market, beyond accelerating the establishment of an integrated African public-private dialogue model, also holds the potential to increase Mozambique’s trade with the rest of the African continent,” he said.

The goods, which were destined for Kenya, marks a major milestone in Mozambique’s role within the Continental Free Trade Framework and signifies its commitment to boosting intra-African trade and regional economic integration.

Mozambique became a signatory to the AfCFTA in 2018 and submitted its tariff offer in 2024.
