Opening discussions on free trade with Greenland

27 September 2006

The Prime Minister of the Faroes, Mr Jóannes Eidesgaard and the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mr Hans Enoksen, discussed various topics of mutual interest in connection with the Faroese Prime Minister’s official visit to Ilulissat.

Both are pleased to again this year announce an agreement for 2006 regarding the mutual fishing industry contract of 1997 between the Faroes and Greenland. Regarding the Norway haddock quota in the Irming Sea, both parties hope for a solution in the negotiations that are currently underway.

Moreover, the Prime Minister of the Faroes and the Prime Minister of Greenland are pleased that the negotiations on a free trade agreement between the Faroes and Greenland can now commence. They both are hopeful that the agreement can be concluded and signed by the Faroese Prime Minister and the Ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs before the end of 2006.

At the meeting, the parties agreed to appoint an official task force to draft a specific agreement governing the joint collaboration within the fishing industry, cultural exchange, education, etc., including addressing the question of establishing consulates in both countries.

The drafting of the agreement is expected to begin as soon as possible with the goal of signing the agreement during the official visit of the Prime Minister of Greenland to the Faroes in June 2007.
