PM has suggested agriculturists to study FTA and plan for long-term

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has advised farmers to study the impacts of the free trade area (FTA) and find ways to handle them after Asean countries have signed a trade agreement with China. He has also told them to apply His Majesty the King’s Sufficiency Economy philosophy in their works.

Gen. Surayud earlier met with the farmers from the National Agricultural Council at the Agricultural Engineering Training Center in Bang Phun District of Pathum Thani Province in the occasion of the third annual assembly meeting. The Prime Minister returned from the People’s Republic of China yesterday, and said the FTA agreement with China will be effective in 2010. He said the FTA may have an influence on Thai agricultural products. He told the agriculturists to study the FTA and be thoroughly prepared in producing high quality goods. They have been advised to look over the logistic and storage operations in order to succeed.

Gen. Surayud said he was raised in an agricultural background as his ancestors were farmers, and thus, he is fully aware of the agricultural problems and obstacles. Even though the standard of agriculturists’ lives is improving, but the Prime Minister still would like to raise the bar during this informative era. Therefore, they would be able to gain more marketing negotiation power, and they can plan for a long-term saving and follow the Sufficiency Economy.
