Seoul, Ottawa to focus on barley, bean in free trade agreement talks

SEOUL, Oct. 7 (Yonhap) — South Korea and Canada will focus on barley, bean, potato and other farm products in free trade agreement (FTA) talks that reopen in Ottawa this week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said Sunday.

Fresh from successful FTA negotiations with the United States, South Korea is pushing similar deals with Canada and the European Unon. The South Korea-U.S. FTA is awaiting approval by the respective legislative bodies of the two countries.

"We will have in-depth discussions on barley, bean, potato and other grains of sensitivity during this round of negotiation," the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said of the Seoul-Ottawa FTA talks scheduled to resume on Tuesday.

The sides have already reached a broad understanding on the extent of market opening for liquor, juice, milk and canned foods, the ministry said in a statement.

The Ottawa meeting, the 11th of its kind, will be followed by another round in Seoul in late November, it said.
