UK offers Madagascar near tariff-free access to £3tn market to boost supply chain

The UK has moved to bolster its trade ties with Madagascar by offering near-total tariff-free access to its market, as part of efforts to boost exports and strengthen supply chain links with developing economies.

The initiative, led by the British Embassy Antananarivo, combines the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) with the UK–Eastern and Southern Africa Economic Partnership Agreement, giving Malagasy exporters better access to trade.

Under the new framework, around 99% of goods can enter the UK tariff-free, alongside simplified rules of origin and expanded regional sourcing options.

Since January 2026, businesses in Madagascar can source materials from across African countries with UK trade agreements while retaining preferential access.

The UK said the measures are designed to help exporters integrate more easily into global supply chains and tap into its £3tn economy, with fewer administrative barriers and greater flexibility in production.

The move forms part of wider efforts to grow trade between the UK and Africa, with a major UK business delegation arriving in Uganda, Kampala this week
