Anti-FTA Protest in Ecuador

7 March 2006

Quito, Mar 7 (Prensa Latina) Workers unions, social, political and student movements are concluding this Tuesday preparations for national strike against the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States.

The strike, to be held on Wednesday, is to repudiate the signing of the FTA with Washington, support closing a contract with US oil company Oxy and rejecting President Alfredo Palacio"s government, leaders from several groups stated.

Carlos Medina, coordinator of the National Teachers Union, said that strikers will block several streets in Guayaquil to demand a $30 increase of minimum wage, deliver budgets to schools and grant student cards.

The Unitary Workers Federation will also join the protest against the government of Palacio, who they say since his inauguration on April 20 has not done anything for the working class.
