CARICOM Leaders Again Negotiate with EU
Georgetown, Dec 6 2007 (Prensa Latina) — The complexity of the negotiations of an Accord of Economic Association with the European Union will mobilize the Heads of State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Friday, for the third time in the last two months.
The leaders of the 15-membere bloc decided on the extraordinary meeting in Georgetown, to examine the conversations from the criteria of the improbability of reaching the agreement before December 31st.
The other topic on the agenda is the increase of food prices in the region.
In October CARIFORUM Heads of States met in Jamaica with the commissioners of Trade and Development of the European Commission to give a political boost to the discussion launched in April 2004, with deadline of January 1st, 2008.
Some of the matters treated in the debate dealt with the opening of markets for welfare and services, the treatment of products like sugar and bananas, public hiring and investment.
At that time, it was reaffirmed that the main objectives of the accord must be promotion of sustainable development, reduction and eventual eradication of poverty and the progressive integration of the countries of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Group into the world economy.
These agreements will replace special export regulations for sugarcane and other products of importance in 79 ex European colonies of Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
