Dhaka to soon begin FTA talks with Islamabad

DHAKA, Aug 15 (APP) - Bangladesh will start talks with Pakistan for separate free trade agreement this year aiming at reducing the country’s trade gap with New Delhi. “We are going to start negotiations for entering into FTA with the neighbouring country this year,” commerce secretary Firoz Ahmed said in here on Saturday. Bangladesh will begin talks with Pakistan after it negotiates with India, he said.

Firoz said an expert committee under the commerce ministry was working on the proposed FTA with the neighbour. The committee is expected to give its opinion soon.

He pointed out that start of FTA negotiations was imperative as the regional trade pact of SAPTA could not yield expected result in reducing the country’s trade gap with its major trade partner India.
