FTA Watch protests trade pact

1 April 2005

BANGKOK, April 1 (TNA) - An advocacy group opposed to bilateral free trade agreements, FTA Watch and several other non-government organisations protested in front of the US Embassy in Bangkok on Friday, ahead of the third round of trade talks scheduled to take place in Pattaya next week.

The demonstrators urged the government to be “transparent” and publicly reveal the details of the negotiations on the Thai-US Free Trade Agreement.

The NGOs also protested against US demands that Thailand extend its intellectual property rights protection beyond those of the World Trade Organisation’s Agreement on Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, or TRIPs. They demanded the exclusion of the IPR from the FTA talks. (TNA)
