India, France to strengthen IPR ties; agreement soon

ECONOMY BUREAU

NEW DELHI, JULY 13: India and France have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the area of intellectual property rights (IPR) and will soon sign a bilateral agreement regarding the same. This was decided after a meeting minister of state for industry Ashwani Kumar had on Wednesday with his French counterpart Francois Loos.

India has also asked the French industry to increase its presence in infrastructure, high technology, aerospace, IT and electronics sectors. Kumar also welcomed the decision of the Paris Chamber of Commerce to send a business delegation to India in December.

The minister is in Paris to promote India as an investment destination.

Kumar and Loos also discussed the feasibility of investments in India by the French small and medium enterprises. Kumar said while Indian companies were aggressively investing overseas, the French investment in India is meager compared to the potential of the French industry.

The Paris Chamber of Commerce, the members of which account for 40% of French GDP, is soon opening a liaison office in Mumbai. The move may give a significant boost to Indo-French economic ties.
