Indian President Makes First-Ever State Visit to Korea

24 January 2006

Indian President Abdul Kalam will make a four-day visit to Korea from Feb. 6 through 9 for a summit with Korean President Roh Moo-hyun. This trip by Kalam will mark the first time that an Indian head of state has paid an official visit to the country.

Kalam and Roh are scheduled to hold summit talks on Feb. 7 at Cheong Wa Dae and declare the beginning of formal negotiations on a bilateral comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA). Experts expect that a CEPA — as a preliminary step to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) — will increase the trade volume by US$3.3 billion between the two countries if an accord is reached in the negotiations.
