Japan to prepare safeguard against imports from Philippines

Japan’s Ministry of Finance said Wednesday that it plans to amend customs-related laws and ordinances to enable Japan to invoke emergency restrictions on imports from the Philippines.

Japan needs such a legal revision to allow the so-called safeguard measure in preparation for a possible surge in the imports under the recently concluded economic partnership agreement with the Philippines, ministry officials said.

The ministry aims to submit amendment bills to an extraordinary session of the Diet, Japan’s parliament, to be convened Sept. 26.

Japan and the Philippines last Saturday signed the EPA, including a free trade agreement, which newly allows, among others, Filipino nurses and care workers to stay in Japan for up to three to four years to obtain Japanese licenses while working in the country. (Jiji Press)
