Japan, Turkey to begin FTA talks next week

Japan and Turkey will hold the first round of negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement next week in Tokyo, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The talks, set for Monday and Tuesday, follow an agreement in January between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and then Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to launch FTA negotiations this year.

The negotiations will involve Toshiro Suzuki, ambassador for international economic affairs at the Foreign Ministry, and Murat Yapici, director general of the European Union Affairs at Turkey’s Ministry of Economy, according to the Japanese ministry.

The two sides will discuss trade in goods and services, as well as ways to promote the talks in the future, it said.

Erdogan became Turkish president in August.
