Korea-EU FTA Talks to Be Sped Up

8 January 2009

The government will speed up negotiations with the European Union to clinch a free trade deal with an aim to implement the agreement in January next year.

Ahn Ho-yeong, trade negotiation coordinator of the Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry, told a regular news conference, “We`ve almost finished negotiations with the EU over the free trade agreement.”

“The two sides made significant progress in major issues at a meeting of top negotiators in Vienna in December last year.”

Korea and the EU will hold a meeting of trade ministers in Seoul Jan. 19 and 20 to narrow differences on remaining issues. The ministry expects the eighth round of negotiations in February and March to be the last on the deal.
