Mercosur, EU to Restart Free-Trade Talks in May, Estado Reports

Dec. 18 (Bloomberg) — The Mercosur trade bloc, made up of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, plans to restart talks with the European Union on a free-trade agreement in May, Estado de S. Paulo reported, citing European Union Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.
Negotiations between the EU and Mercosur, frozen since 2005, come at a time when the World Trade Organization’s Doha Round talks are stalled, the newspaper said.
The EU signed an agreement yesterday to donate 50 million euros ($72 million) to Mercosur, the newspaper added.
