MERCOSUR: Uruguay Sues Argentina

9 August 2006

Montevideo, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The Southern Common Market Claims Court is hearing Uruguay’s case against Argentina due to road blocks by Argentinean citizens on international routes.

Uruguay blames the roadblocks in Gualeguaychu for the loss of 400 million dollars, jobs and small businesses in the peak of the tourist season.

The contenders and their witnesses are first attending an oral hearing as preliminary step of the proceedings.

The roadblocks in Rios province are to protest the cellulose plants’ construction in Fray Bentos (Rio Negro), Uruguay, which they consider environmentally harmful.

Argentinean Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana rejected Uruguay’s request to set up a Binational Technical Monitoring Commission because it would be like accepting the factories.
