Myanmar government seeks parliament nod for Asean protocol

The Myanmar government is seeking parliament approval to ratify the protocol to the Asean Charter on Dispute Settlement Mechanisms, sources said on Wednesday.

The proposal on the move was submitted by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin on Tuesday. He stressed the need for the country to ratify the protocol as it is a useful mechanism for peaceful resolution of dispute among member countries, Xinhua news agency reported.

Parliament is set to debate the protocol on Friday.

Six Asean member countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, have confirmed their acceptance of the protocol but Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore are yet to do so, awaiting approval at home.
