Pakistan to co-host world’s first international conference on Investment Treaties

FRANKFURT, Nov 30 (APP) : Pakistan will co-host with Germany world’s first-ever International Conference on Investment Treaties in Frankfurt from December 1-3, aimed at examining the policy issues that will shape international investment laws in the years to come. The conference for “taking stock and a look to the future” marks the Golden Jubilee of signing of the first Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between Pakistan and Germany on November 25, 1959 and will focus on significant changes in the pattern of movement of foreign capital, deep financial crisis, turf war over competence in Europe and the threat of protectionism.

The moot would examine the policy issues that will shape international investment law in the years to come.

The conference here at the financial capital of Germany and a key transport hub in Europe, will also be attended by those involved in investing capital abroad and their financiers, insurers and advisers ; advocating, adjudicating and providing institutional support for investment disputes.

Germany has strong relations with Pakistan in textiles and textile machinery and both the countries enjoy good business and trade relations in various sectors of the economy.

Pakistan provides ample opportunities to foreign investors in various economic sectors with Investment Return Rate (IRR) ranging between 20 per cent to over 30 per cent.

Despite many odds Pakistan is on the top among its South Asian competitors in the ‘ease of doing business ranking’ of the World Bank report.

The conference is designed to complement the “OECD Global Forum on International Investment VIII” which will take place in Paris on December 7-8.

Apart from Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani the Conference will be addressed by Roland Koch, Prime Minister of the State of Hesse, Hans-Joachim Otto, Parliamentary State Secretary, Ministry of Economics and Technology, Germany, Dr. Ludolf v. Wartenberg, President of the Gesellschaft zur F”rderung von Auslandsinvestitionen e.V., Wilhelm Freiherr von Haller, Member of the Management Committee of Deutsche Bank AG.
