Peru Farmers Unite vs. FTA with US

13 April 2006

Lima, Apr 13 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian farmers are organizing a march from Cusco to Lima to protest the free trade agreement with the US, the president of Peru’s National Agrarian Confederation, Antolin Huascar, stated Thursday.

The farmers have not announced the date yet, but affirmed they will campaign against the signing of the agreement with US yesterday in Washington.

Huazcar said Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Alfredo Ferrero betrayed the agrarian sector and country by signing of the deal behind the people’s back, "when most producers were demanding a referendum."

"The agreement will affect small producers, as the domestic market will practically disappear with the flooding of US subsidized produce," he stressed.

Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo travelled to the US Thursday for a four-day visit focusing on the signing of the agreement, which now waits for the approval of both Congresses.
