Peru’s Prime Minister says FTA with US fundamental

25 April 2006

NEW YORK, April 25 (Reuters) - Peru’s Prime Minister Pedro Paulo Kuczynski said on Tuesday it’s "absolutely necessary" for his country to pass the free trade agreement with the U.S as the deal will allow Peruvian textile and agricultural industries to grow.

Showing preference for presidential candidate Alan Garcia, the Minister said nationalist candidate Ollanta Humala would not agree to sign such a deal.

"It’s fundamental to get it approved after the elections. The agreement will make permanent the access of our textiles" to the U.S. market," Kuczynski told investors at a conference organized by Fitch’s Ratings.

Kuczynski said the FTA proposal should be sent to Congress no later than June.
