Peru to invest more than US$300k in FTA lobbying efforts in US

15 March 2007

(LIP-jl) (CPN) — Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Relations acknowledged that it has contracted the American legal firm Patton Boggs LLP to begin lobbying efforts to speed up the free trade agreement ratification process in the United States.

Patton Boggs LLP will sign a contract with the Peruvian government to cover all costs of up to US$300,000 associated with the FTA lobbying efforts

The contract will be signed by representatives off the legal firm and the Peruvian Ambassador to the United States, Felipe Ortiz de Zevallos.

In addition to the amount stated in the contract, Peru will provide an additional US$60,000 to cover any costs associated with unexpected developments or circumstances.

The Peruvian Embassy in the United States, which presented a detailed study calling for the hiring of the lobbying firm, will supervise all aspects of the contracts and services provided by Patton Boggs LLP.

The FTA between the U.S. and Peru is currently being evaluated by U.S. Congress whose members have reportedly been at odds with labor stipulations.
