Taiwan Quick Take: PR firm hired to push FTA

Staff Writer with agencies

29 July 2006

Taiwan has hired a US public relations firm to push the US to sign a free-trade agreement with Taipei, a Taiwanese radio network reported yesterday. The Broadcasting Corp of China (BCC), in a dispatch from Washington, said that Taiwan was paying the Glover Park Group US$25,000 a month in exchange for its "strategic communications and consultancy." The deal was reported as Taiwan Vice Economics Minister Steve Chen was visiting the US to lobby for the signing of the FTA. He has called on US think tanks and addressed seminars to seek support for the pact. "The US government basically is not opposed to signing the FTA, but it needs the backing from US enterprises, so our next campaign will focus on winning support from US enterprises," the BCC quoted Chen as saying.
