Repression on FTA Opponents Denounced
San Jose, Aug 26 2007 (Prensa Latina) — The Costa Rican Human Rights Association denounced the increase of the police repression against local citizens, students and social leaders opposed to the Free Trade Agreement with US in their Sunday statement.
The Association said several police officers from the Intervention Police Unit (UIP) brutally repressed the participants of a protest on August 17 in the installations of Empresa Casino, in San Ramon Alajuela, in occasion of the visit to a textile factory by President Oscar Arias.
The Human Rights Association said 20 neighbors surrounded the factory that day, to express their disagreement with the FTA.
Later, UIP members followed, threatened and beat two of the participants in the protest, Adrian Carranza, 24, and his brother Sebastian, 16.
Prior to this the Association received several demands from people that were followed by police officers after taking part in similar protests, and denounced before the justice.
