25 April 2005

SINGAPORE : Singapore, Chile, New Zealand and Brunei have completed their fifth round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.

The meeting was held in Singapore on April 18 to 23.

Singapore’s Trade and Industry Ministry said the four parties reached agreement on most areas and were continuing to work towards the conclusion of the negotiations by early May.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on a comprehensive range of issues including trade in goods, rules of origin, customs procedures, trade remedies, technical barriers to trade, trade in services, financial services and investment.

They also discussed temporary entry of persons, intellectual property, competition policy, government procurement, cooperation, institutional provisions and dispute settlement.

Labour and environment officials from the four parties also held discussions during the round.

MTI said Brunei, which had participated in preceding rounds as an observer, took part in this meeting as a full negotiating party.

All four countries are member economies of APEC.
