Spain expects to sign Peru-EU deal when takes bloc presidency in 2010

Lima, Feb. 07 (ANDINA).— Peru’s Foreign minister Jose Antonio García Belaunde said Saturday that Spain wants to sign formally the Association Agreement between Peru and the European Union (EU), when this country takes on presidency of the bloc in 2010.

He indicated this was expressed by his Spanish counterpart, Miguel Angel Moratinos, who he met with in Madrid yesterday to sign an agreement that will allow Peruvians residing in Spain to vote in their municipal elections.

“Moratinos said to us they expect the agreement (of association) with Peru can be concluded by January 1, 2010, when they assume the Presidency of the European Union, so we can sign this under their Presidency", he affirmed.

García Belaunde considered the statements of his Spanish counterpart as "good news" because it reflects the will to advance and reach the agreement, which negotiations were resumed in Bogota.

The EU, that was initially negotiating this agreement with the Andean Community integrated by Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia, started bilateral talks with the three first ones due to the impossibility to make progress in bloc negotiations.
