Thailand pressured to exclude autos from FTA talks with Japan

BANGKOK - U.S. and European carmakers recently demanded the Thai government exclude the automobile sector from free trade negotiations with Japan and warned that they may abandon investment in Thailand if import tariffs on Japanese luxury cars are lifted, local media reported Friday.

In a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, dated March 22, top executives of eight non-Japanese car companies in Thailand opposed Japan’s request for duty-free import of motor vehicles with engine capacities of over 3.0 liters as well as rapid reductions for all other vehicles with lower engine capacities from 2008 to 2010.
