U.S. ambassador: Dominican Republic will positively enter Free Trade

6 October 2006

Santo Domingo.- The United States ambassador Hans Hertell discarded yesterday that there would be any possibility for the Dominican Republic to be left out of the Free Trade Agreement with Central America and the United States.

As he left from a meeting at the Presidential Palace with president Leonel Fernandez and other Dominican officials, Hertell emphasized that the agreement was signed and ratified by the Dominican congress and that the Dominican government has the political will to deal with pending issues.

The ambassador announced that the Industry and Commerce minister, Francisco Javier Garcia, would travel to Washington next week, to sustain interviews with officials from the United States Trade Representative Office.

“I believe that we are very close to resolving all issues,” assured Hertell, and added that there is a group of legal initiatives that will be submitted to the Congress during the implementation phase.
