US cheese companies prepare to infiltrate Korea
Korea has become Asia’s top importer of cheese from the U.S., beating out Japan last year.
The country imported over $98 million of cheese in the first seven months of this year, up 25 percent from the previous year. Koreans’ growing appetite for the dairy product saw last year’s import value almost double that of 2006.
As Korea and the U.S. await the approval of their respective legislatures on a Free Trade Agreement, around 30 members of the U.S. Dairy Export Council came to Korea to study and tap this promising market this week.
With various marketing strategies planned, local companies are preparing for a new rush for U.S. cheese. Domestic firms are expected to face stiff competition, however, as U.S. companies come armed with years of know-how and will offer lower prices to consumers thanks to the FTA.
