ECVC celebrates important victory on EU-Mercosur in the European Parliament

European Coordination Via Campesina (ECVC) warmly welcomes today’s vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, in which MEPs voted in favour of requesting an opinion from the Court of Justice of the European Union on the compatibility of the proposed EU–Mercosur Partnership Agreement (EMPA) and Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) with the EU Treaties.

With this vote, MEPs have upheld the democratic functioning of the European Union and exercised their institutional responsibility to ensure that far-reaching trade agreements comply fully with EU law. They have also clearly listened to the voices of farmers, who have mobilised across Europe in recent weeks to oppose the EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement. The Parliament must now wait for the opinion of the CJEU to vote on the agreement itself in plenary.

ECVC demands that the European Commission fully respects the role of the Parliament and the democratic outcome of this vote. The Commission must now put the EU-Mercosur agreement on hold and refrain from any steps towards provisional application or ratification until the CJEU has delivered its opinion.

As Morgan Ody, farmer and member of the ECVC Coordinating Committee present in Strasbourg today to meet with MEPs before the vote, underlined, “Any attempt to provisionally apply this FTA by the European Commission would be a democratic scandal. Farmers will remain vigilant and mobilised to ensure that this does not happen.”
