Human Wall on Mexico-US Border to Protest NAFTA

Mexico, Dec 29 2007 (Prensa Latina) — On January 1, Mexican farmers and social groups will make a human wall on the border checkpoint in Ciudad Juarez to protest against the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

"That human wall will be built on the Cordoba-Americas International Bridge in Ciudad Juarez, state of Chihuahua, to criticize the NAFTA stage on agricultural sectors, national producers and consumers," the Farmers’ Democratic Front said.

The organization, which is a member of the National Campaign in Defense of Food Sovereignty and the Reactivation of Mexican Countryside, made up of more than 300 groups, demanded the immediate derogation of the measure to prevent hunger in Mexico.

We will continue to hold protests and awareness-building events against the NAFTA, which will lift tariffs on corn, beans, sugar and powder milk imported from the United States and Canada, the group said in a press release.

The Front said, "The NAFTA can be renegotiated if Mexico follows the rules of the World Trade Organization and leaves basic products of the family shopping basket out of the trade treaties."

It said it is possible to appeal to the Vienna Treaty, a law on international agreements, claiming that the accord was signed during the last decade under drastic conditions without excluding corn and beans.

"If there were political will and popular commitment, they would resort to the Magna Carta, which prioritizes the fundamental rights of people over trade agreements signed by Mexico," added the communiqué.
