Mustapa Vows To Work Hard To Develop Trade

9 April 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) — Incoming International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed has vowed to work hard to ensure that the country’s trade remains in good shape despite difficult times.

Mustapa, 58, an economics expert who helped to steer Malaysia through the 1998 financial crisis, will be facing a series of free trade agreements (FTAs) that are still under negotiations, including with the United States which accounts for more than 10 percent of all exports.

"These are challenging times and we (the minsitry) will work hard to ensure that the country’s trade remains in good shape," he told Bernama via phone Thursday after being named in the new Cabinet line-up of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.

Considered humble and serious, Mustapa is expected to successfully close the deals on the various FTAs that Malaysia has embarked on, providing a boost for the country’s export-dependent economy.

Mustapa holds a first class economics degree from the University of Melbourne and a masters degree in economic development from the Boston University.
