Angola, US to sign trade agreement next week

LUANDA (Reuters) — Angola, which rivals Nigeria as Africa’s biggest oil producer, and the United States will sign a trade and investment deal next week to boost bilateral trade, the U.S. ambassador to Angola was cited as saying on Tuesday.

Dan Mozena, in comments broadcast on Radio Nacional de Angola, said that Angola and the United States would sign a Trade Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) — seen as a precursor to a full free trade agreement.

Angola is the United States’ third-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, mainly because of its petroleum exports, while U.S. exports to Angola consist mainly of industrial goods and services such as oilfield and mining equipment.

Mozena also said Angola’s Foreign Minister Assuncao dos Anjos will travel to the United States on May 21 to meet Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other top U.S. officials.
