Morocco, Canada mull free trade agreement

Canada and Morocco held in Ottawa June 1-3 the second session of exploratory discussions on the possibility to negotiate a free trade agreement between the two countries.

The discussions enabled the Moroccan delegation, led by Secretary General to the Foreign Ministry, Youssef Amrani, to discover the sectoral specificities of the Canadian economy and to examine the means to bolster bilateral economic relations mainly through the promotion of trade exchanges, the strengthening of Canadian investments in Morocco and the development of the technical and financial cooperation to the benefit of Morocco.

Amrani said Morocco wishes to set up a modern economic and commercial partnership with Canada to avail itself of the country’s expertise in economic matters.

Amrani also underlined the importance of an ongoing impact study and internal consultations, notably with the Moroccan private sector and all actors concerned, on the development of relations with Canada.

The Moroccan Official met Tuesday with Canadian Foreign Vice-Minister, Leonard J. Edwards, on several issues, mainly the transatlantic dialogue, Forum for the Future to be held in Morocco, the regional security challenges and the situation in the Middle-East.

The two parties also showcased the advanced status granted by the European Union to Morocco, the progress of the Union for the Mediterranean and the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) latest resolution on the Sahara issue in which it reiterates the Council’s call on all parties to continue negotiations with good faith and in the spirit of compromise.

Amrani held earlier fruitful talks with International Trade Vice-Minister, Louis Levesque.
