Official: Malaysia, a springboard for China to penetrate ASEAN

17 November 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — Malaysia can be the springboard for China’s investors and entrepreneurs to penetrate the ASEAN market, a Malaysian official said on Tuesday.

Malaysian Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Peter Chin Fah Kui made this remark when closing the World Chinese Economic Forum near here.

Chin said that Malaysia welcomes China’s investors as well as the setting up of regional offices by China’s entrepreneurs in the country to boost trade between the two nations.

Chin also said that the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (FTA) is the single largest FTA in the world whose establishment would strengthen the ties between China and ASEAN.

As an ASEAN member, Malaysia could collaborate with China in various forms including establishing partnerships to venture into other areas of the world such as the Middle East and Africa, added Chin.

He also noted that close cooperation would enable China and Malaysia to overcome challenges brought about by the global financial crisis.

Besides trading, the China-Malaysia relations could be enhanced through political dialogues, education exchanges, safety cooperation and business cooperation, added Chin.

He said that this would contribute to regional peace while sharing prosperity together.

The two-day forum drew some 300 participants China, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, the United States and China’s Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
