EU-Ukraine agreement on horizon

If it "continues to demonstrate its determination" to satisfy the required conditions, Ukraine could sign an association agreement with the European Union during the Polish EU Presidency, in the second half of this year, said a diplomatic source in Warsaw, on 4 February, at the conclusion of a visit to Poland by Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovich.

He stated the day before that EU membership was his country’s "top foreign policy priority".

In January, however, as difficulties in negotiating the trade aspect of the agreement continued, the Commission had adopted a tough tone with Yanukovich’s regime – accused of stifling opposition – reminding it that closer relations between Kiev and the EU were conditional on respect for democratic principles.

Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle warned Kiev at the time that obstacles to freedoms could jeopardise signature of the association agreement and abolition of the EU’s visa requirement.
