Strong Lankan campaign against CEPA agreement begins today

Sri Lanka’s increasingly, protectionist business interests have intensified their campaign against Indo-Lanka Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) demanding the government to cancel the agreement. A joint declaration against CEPA is to be made by a group of professionals who are against CEPA at a seminar to be held in Colombo this evening (Tuesday the 14th). A book titled “CEPA EPA (No for CEPA)” will be launched on the occation orgainsed by the Maubima Lanka Foundation.

A spokesman for the anti-CEPA group, Managing Director Multichemi Group Samantha Kumarasinghe said that CEPA is bound to cause serious harm to Sri Lanka. According to him the Indian authorities have consulted around 1000 Indian economists on CEPA. But in Sri Lanka’s case it was the opposite, he alleged.

Among the others who have voiced their strong opposition to CEPA is Chairman Maubima Lanka Foundation Ariyaseela Wickremanayake, head of the DSI Group of Companies - Kulatunga Rajapaksa, Managing Director Samson Rajarata Tiles - Dr. Bandula Perera and Chairman Ceylon Biscuits - Mineka Wickremasingha. Mr Wickremanayake has always been a strong advocate of self-reliance and boosting local industries. (BS)
